How I Came to Write the "Liver Disease Survivors Guide"

My father had been diagnosed with a gallbladder polyp with a high risk
of developing Liver Cirrhosis. When my dad remarked that two of my
uncles had died from Cirrhosis, the alarm bells in my head went off! My
dad was a great source of strength and inspiration for me and couldn't
even stand the thought of him being affected by a serious illness.

I had to know what this disease was, get to the root of this thing and
get an upper hand over it. It was the first time I heard of this
disease ... I didn't know what it was. It got me curious, fearful and
worried at the same time.

I Thought To Myself, How Serious Is
This Liver Disease Called "Cirrhosis"?

If two of my dad's brothers died from it, what is the chance that my
dad would have it too? Is it hereditary? What causes it? I wanted to
find out exactly what happened to my uncles because I wanted to know
how we can prevent this for my dad?

My Uncles were distant relatives and we had moved overseas long ago, so
we didn't have much contact for a long time. But I was determined to
find some answers and so I contacted my aunts (widows) and my cousins
and found out their terrible, sad and moving stories.

My older uncle was only 41 years old when he died. He had a beautiful
wife and three young children ages 11, 8 and 6 whom he left behind.
According to my cousin (who was only 11 at that time, but he is now
24), a couple of years before he died, they noticed skin rashes on his
back and his skin and eyes had turned yellow then followed by constant
fever.

So They Took Him For A Check Up And
Confirmed That He Had Hepatitis C

His condition worsened over time, he experienced severe abdominal pain
due to the water build up, the fluid was drained out but only to
discover that it caused all sorts of complications. At one stage my
cousin recalled that his father also underwent chemo.

This was the time that the doctor confirmed he had Stage 4 Cirrhosis
and told him that he only has 6 months to live. He died 3 months later.

My Other Uncle Died Younger Than My First Uncle

He was only 35. He also had a young family - his lovely wife and two
boys ages 10 and 6.

The difference between him and my older uncle was that he had no bad
habits - doesn't drink, doesn't smoke, keeps himself fit whereas my
other uncle was the opposite. He was a heavy drinker and smoked a lot!

They found out that he had Cirrhosis of liver by accident! They took
their younger son to the doctor because he had a fever. Meanwhile at
the hospital , he decided to have a routine blood check up done on the
advice of his family doctor.

To his shock the tests returned positive for Hepatitis B. The doctor
didn't believe it at first, so he had the tests repeated and they came
back positive for Hepatitis B again.

They Went For A Second Opinion And Got An Ultra Sound Done
It Confirmed That He Had Cirrhosis

He also had biopsy done but the doctor said it wasn't cancer and he
should be ok. The doctor just simply prescribed him some vitamins for
the liver.

But after a few months, he had more tests done including a monthly
ultra sound and it showed that his condition was not improving. The
only thing that puzzled him and his doctor was the fact that he was
feeling OK despite the liver disease. He had no pain, no symptoms, none
whatsoever! So they decided to just continue the vitamins intake.

It was only after a few more months he started to feel abdominal pain
and started getting fever in the evenings. The doctor advised him to
undergo a CT SCAN and the result confirmed cancer of the liver!

After further investigations and examination he was given the shocking
news that he had Stage 3 liver cancer and his liver was under severe
damage and he may only survive around 3-6 months.

He Became Desperate To Do Anything...

...To do whatever it takes but after further medical care he was told
that he may not even survive liver transplant. The doctor further told
my uncle and my aunt to just spend his remaining days with family and
children because the liver and body may not hold out for long and his
days were being numbered....it could be 3 months....3 weeks....or 3
days.

The doctor told my uncle that once you see blood in your vomit and in
your stool....it is `time'.

It was exactly 3 days, my aunt and two cousins witnessed him vomit with
blood and had excreted bloody stool. My uncle ordered to see all his
family, including his siblings. My dad immediately flew overseas when
he was told the horrible news - but it was too late. My uncle was gone.

After I heard their sad stories, there were so many questions rushing
through my head.

Is this liver disease called `cirrhosis' really is a death sentence?
How does it strike its victims? How come they were not able to diagnose
their disease early enough so it can be cured? Wasn't there enough
